Engineering Consultant; White Young Green Specialist Structures

Hi, I'm Rhys Bowen and I studied MEng, Ship Science Multidisciplinary within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

The best part about studying at Southampton was the quality of the teaching received (both lectures and tutoring), which ultimately enabled me to build an enjoyable career. I also thoroughly enjoyed my final year group project which providing a good base for going on into industry.

What do you do?

Chiefly I work on structural analysis projects that often involve a design and/or design consultancy component. Projects have been in the marine, civil, architectural and rail fields, and involve the design and analysis of structures in composites, wood and steelwork.

What's the best part of your job?

The variety of projects I have the opportunity to work on. Project timescales vary from between two days to several months, and often each project is in a completely different field. As well being very interesting, I learn a huge amount and I can apply that experience to future projects.

Why did you go into this career?

I wanted to go straight into industry after graduation. Specialist Structures were offering a position that had a lot of potential for gaining experience in a broad range of engineering fields and the promise of real project work in cutting-edge technologies from the outset.

What is your education/experience:

Up to age of 16: 11 GCSEs at the Hayling School; After 16: A levels in maths, physics and design and technology at Havant College.

Any advice on getting the first job?

Start very early to get ahead of the competition and to give yourself time to find a position you want. Seek out as many resources for finding career opportunities as possible.

Why did you choose Southampton?

Its excellent reputation for engineering studies, close-nit campus, good resources.

What is your advice to potential students?

Decide on what you enjoy doing, what you would like to be involved in and what you want to achieve. You never know where you might be in five years so never rule anything out.

What are your hobbies?

Cycling, electric guitar.
