Honours for Engineering projects
The University of Southampton's achievements in the pioneering European Union collaboration ZeroWIN, encouraging industry to eliminate its waste products by maximising recycling, have been recognised with a bronze award in a contest organised by the website letsrecycle.com to encourage waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
The five year project, now nearing its end, has achieved all its targets to encourage zero tolerance of waste, especially in the construction sector. Professor Ian Williams has led two of the workstreams in this 30 partner, 10 country initiative and Southampton hopes to continue with this work in future, see www.zerowin.eu ZeroWIN has also been shortlisted in the 2014 National Recycling Awards; the winners will be announced in July.
Engineering's contribution to Science and Engineering Week events at the University of Southampton have also been highlighted in the British Science Association awards. It came first in the best Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Initiative category. Dr Tony Curran, who is also part of the University's popular Roadshow team, a major element in its outreach activity, was pleased that the hard work of students and staff in conveying the excitement of engineering and environmental science to wider audiences has been recognised. "Scientists and engineers at Southampton work closely with industry and the community, we are delighted to win this award against stiff competition," he says.
