Spreading the word worldwide about Audiology programmes at Southampton
The University of Southampton’s Audiology programme’s global reputation is growing.
Third year BSc Audiology student Christine McDermott from Donegal in Ireland will embark on her final placement at ‘The Ear Clinic’ in Dublin, run by Southampton alumna Nina Reade early in 2015. She transferred to Southampton with seven fellow students from an Irish university at the end of her first year of studies and has never regretted her decision.
“It’s the best opportunity I’ve ever taken,” she explains. “Everyone at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) is so friendly, there’s a real family feeling and the lecturers are always ready to help if you’ve got a problem or a question.
“Everything you learn at Southampton you put into practice on your placement. It’s a very worthwhile job, you’re giving children and adults a better quality of life through improving their hearing. I’ve already experienced some of those wonderful moments on my placements with Nina.”
Nina is Managing Director of The Ear Clinic and www.earshop.com, international editor for Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) News magazine and occasional lecturer at University College Dublin. She says “I would highly recommend Southampton. It’s a hive of activity to satisfy any curious mind with excellent infrastructure including a clinic and cochlear implant programme. The staff at Audiology fosters a scientific and caring approach, delivering employers very safe and capable graduates of excellent calibre.”
Other successful Southampton Audiology graduates from around the world include Hadeel Alsaleh who is now Assistant Professor at the Princess Noor University in Riyadh, teaching the next generation of audiologists in Saudi Arabia and Kaitesi Batamuliza Mukara from Rwanda who is now making a difference as one of her country’s few qualified audiologists.
