National honours for University of Southampton Engineering

Published: 20 March 2015

University of Southampton postgraduate research engineer Agnieszka Dzielendziak has won the Bronze Award for Engineering at this year’s prestigious SET (Science, Engineering, Technology) for Britain competition at Westminster.

MPs and parliamentarians toured the exhibition of posters in Portcullis House to learn more about cutting edge work by UK early career researchers across science, engineering and mathematics; the winners were chosen for the quality of their work and their ability to communicate their research with enthusiasm to a lay audience.

Judges were impressed by Agnieszka’s project exploring exciting new sustainable materials for the marine industry. “It was a challenge to explain my research to people from very different backgrounds but I enjoyed the event, especially meeting experienced academics in my field and people from industry as well as the MPs. I was delighted to win an award in competition with many talented researchers and hope the experience will help me in my career,” says Agnieszka.

The final year PhD student is investigating how a ‘green’ resin made from linseed oil instead of crude oil could be used in boatbuilding as part of her multidisciplinary project combining materials science, chemistry and ship science. She chose to study in Southampton, travelling to the UK from her home in Wroclaw in Poland, because of the reputation of the academics in Engineering at the University.

Postgraduate researcher Davide Zilli from Electronics and Computer Science at Southampton won the Silver Award in the SET for Britain Engineering category. Agnieszka’s fellow engineering students Giuseppe Cannella, Stefania Fabbri and Vanesa Martinez Nogues also presented posters at the event.

More than 500 researchers applied to take part in SET for Britain, 35 percent were chosen to present their work at Westminster. The UK Government’s Parliamentary and Scientific Committee runs the competition during National Science Week, in collaboration with learned societies and industry partners.
