A team of Southampton Masters students has competed against some of the best engineering universities around the world in Lausanne at the HYDROcontest 2015.

While their entry was marred by technical problems, they all learned a great deal about naval energy efficiency by taking part in the long distance race on Lake Geneva and urge future students to continue in the contest and tackle the challenge for themselves in 2016. Throughout the project, team members updated their social media pages with their progress, earlier they secured the support of sponsors to help with the costs.
“It was a great project for us as we are all interested in high performance sailing. We used hydrofoiling techniques and managed to ‘fly’ our craft over the water but, in event, we needed more time to make our entry competitive.” says communication manager, Louis Hulet. “It would be great if engineering students in years to come could develop our work and come up with improved designs. It is a very worthwhile contest and was great fun to take part in it”
Members of the Southampton HYDRO team were Matthieu Vincent, Pietro Tibuzzi, Louis Hulet, Marion James, Javier Calderon-Sanchez, Nimath Ibrahim, Sebastien Lopubeyre, Chris Ryan, Tony Yu Tsao and Nicolas Verkant.
