Engineering students win Shell prize with positioning system for autonomous robots
Mechanical Engineering students from the University of Southampton have been presented a Shell Innovation Award for an inventive solution to improve the performance of autonomous robots.
Justin Godden, Oliver Heilmann, Caroline Layzell, Michael Leat and Alice Loneragan proposed the new localisation system in their final year Group Design Project.
The talented students were named the winners of the inaugural Shell prize at this summer’s University of Southampton Design Show, which showcased projects at Boldrewood Innovation Campus across a range of disciplines including Aeronautics and Astronautics, Acoustics, Civil and Mechanical Engineering and Ship Science.
The successful Group Design Project, which was supervised by Professor Paul White and Professor Martyn Hill , measured the position trajectory of robots designed for the Eurobot competition using a combination of gyroscopic, optical and ultrasonic sensors.
