Previous research on the behaviour of asymmetrical dampers showed that this type of shock absorber can provide higher levels of comfort for vehicle passengers. Here, a nonlinear shock absorber is used to diminish vertical and pitch accelerations on passenger vehicles, under harmonic excitations. The geometrical configuration of the suspension system is taken into account in the model, in order to include geometrical nonlinearities in the spring and damping forces. The simulation results show that the asymmetrical system provides higher levels of comfort in many situations. The geometrical configuration of the suspension system proves to be of high importance for the overall dynamical behaviour.

Marcos Silveira , UNESP. Marcos Silveira is Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the São Paulo State University (UNESP). He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from UNESP in 2006. After a period working at automotive and aerospace companies, including Mercedes-Benz, General Motors and Embraer, in 2011 he completed his Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen, UK, working under the supervision of Prof. Marian Wiercigroch on the dynamics of drill-strings used in oil drilling. His research interests are in nonlinear dynamics applied to improvement of comfort in passenger vehicles, energy harvesting systems, slender structures under torsional oscillations and characterisation of progression of infections on biological systems, with focus on mathematical modelling, computer simulation and also experimental study.
