Abstract
Research on classical guitars at Cardiff has centred on trying to understand the basic physics of sound production and deriving quantitative relationships between the construction of instruments and their perceived tone and playing qualities. This talk will take a retrospective look at theoretical and practical studies of stringed musical instruments teasing out the more fruitful aspects of this work and conclude with some recent measurements of sound fields and input-output efficiency of the instrument.
