Event details

ISVR Engineering Research Seminar Series 2019-2020

Everyone is welcome to attend every seminar.

The field of acoustofluidics (defined here as the acoustic manipulation of fluids and particles within fluids) has expanded rapidly over the last fifteen years with many groups reporting advances in the field using devices based around both surface acoustic wave and bulk acoustic wave actuation. This presentation will include an overview of acoustofluidics and some of its applications, with an emphasis on recent developments in Southampton in work led by Peter Glynne-Jones, Dario Carugo and Martyn Hill. Examples will be given of using acoustic radiation forces and acoustic streaming for biomedical applications including tissue engineering, bacterial concentration, microbubble manipulation and imaging cytometry.

Speaker information

Martyn Hill , Associate Dean (Education) for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. graduated from the ISVR in 1985 and subsequently worked on a variety of biomedical and industrial parameter estimation and measurement problems in the Mechanical Engineering Department. He is now Associate Dean (Education) for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Much of Martyn’s work since 1996 has focused on the application of ultrasonic waves to microfluidic systems, particularly through the use of ultrasonic radiation forces
