ISVR Hearing and Balance Centre Research Seminar
The human auditory system is sensitive to frequencies in excess of 20 kHz. However, clinical tests of hearing are usually restricted to frequencies only up to 8 kHz. The first part of this talk focusses on various aspects of clinical measurements of hearing above 8 kHz, such as the effects of ear canal acoustics. Some recent research at ISVR on high-frequency otoacoustic emissions and audiogram ripple will be discussed. In the second part of the talk, ISVR research on potential adverse effects of human exposure to very-high frequency sounds will be discussed.
Speaker information
Dr Ben Lineton, Lecturer in Audiology within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. Dr Ben Lineton was originally educated in mechanical, aeronautical, and acoustical engineering at Imperial College in London, at the Swiss Federal Institute in Zurich, and at ISVR in Southampton. He has worked as an engineer in the energy and automotive industries; and as a research scientist at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Southampton in 2001 for work on the generation mechanisms of otoacoustic emissions. Since 2004, he has been a lecturer on the BSc and MSc Audiology programmes, and the BSc Healthcare Science programme at ISVR.
