ISVR Engineering Research Seminar Series
Binaural perception is an implicitly integrative process. Interaural time differences are combined with interaural intensity differences; binaural cues at one frequency need be combined with those at another. But integration is not equal: some frequencies are more important than others.
In the first part of this talk Professor Michael Akeroyd will present a summary of this field, and present some new experimental results that question whether the generally-presumed dominance of low-frequency ITDs occurs for speech.
In the second part, Professor Michael Akeroyd will describe a new neural network model that has the potential to give insight into the mechanics of integration.

Professor Michael Akeroyd ,Professor of Hearing Sciences, University of Nottingham. Previously he did his PhD at the MRC Applied Psychology Unit in Cambridge, then postdocs at MRC IHR Nottingham, University of Connecticut Health Centre, and the University of Sussex before joining the Scottish Section of MRC /CSO Institute of Hearing Research, Glasgow in 2002 as a Programme Leader Track. He became the Section Director in Glasgow in 2008 then overall Director of MRC IHR in 2015 through to its closure in 2018. He has over 70 peer-reviewed papers in hearing and currently holds research grants from the MRC and EPSRC. He was awarded the 2013 Thomas Simm Littler Prize of the British Society of Audiology, is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, and past President of the International Collegium of Rehabilitative Audiology. This year he is an Output Assessor for REF Unit-of-Assessment #3.
