ISVR Research Seminar
"Hearables"—in-ear headphones with built-in microphones and signal processing capability—offer many new opportunities to reproduce sound that adapts and responds to user preferences, activities, and context. For example, they can change how the audio is rendered on a noisy train compared to a quiet library, or reproduce a telephone conversation so that the talker sounds as if they're coming from a position that is as clear and intelligible as possible.
This seminar will introduce a research project combining audio signal analysis and perception with the aim of realising novel context-aware headphone rendering. The presenters will introduce the overall project and summarise some key work to date. First, the results of an experimental comparison of binaural direction of arrival estimation methods will be presented, including traditional approaches with convolutional neural networks trained using selected feature set combinations in a data-centric way. Second, work on quantifying the headphone listening experience in various contexts will be presented.

The talk will be presented by three audio researchers from the University of Surrey.
Phil Coleman is Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Sound Recording (IoSR). His research interests are broadly in the domain of engineering and perception of 3D spatial audio, including object-based audio, sound field control, loudspeaker and microphone array processing, and enabling new user experiences in spatial audio. He received the Ph.D. degree in 2014 from the University of Surrey.
Andres Estrella T. is a PhD student in Machine Listening at the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing, University of Surrey. He received his Msc. with focus on audio signal processing at the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden.
Milap Rane is a PhD student in IoSR, Surrey. A musician at heart, and a technologist by education, Milap stumbled into Signal Processing as a student of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering in India, pursued an M.S in Music Technology at Georgia Tech, and worked in the industry for three years.
