Applying for a Defence and Security Mobility DTP Studentship

Applications for 2021 entry are now extended

Do you want to influence the future direction of Defence and Security (D&S) or explore new or enhanced areas of research? Would you value the opportunity to pursue a personal or employer-related research interest in D&S, a mid-career change of direction or advancement or are you looking to transition between military and hi-tech D&S related civilian roles? All these whilst studying for a doctoral level qualification that allows a flexible work/study balance.

Then we would still like to hear from you as we are delighted to let you know that in response to the enthusiastic reception for the first cohort, we are able to offer a small number of extra places on Cohort One for the Autumn of 2021.

New Deadline: Applications must be completed by close of play on Tuesday 31 August 2021. Applications will undergo the same rigorous process. All shortlisted applicants will be invited to a virtual interview. Interviews take place w/c 6 September 2021. Interviews are most likely to be Friday 10 September.

How to apply

We are keen to know what topic you’d like to focus your research and your background.  So, as a part of your application, we would like to you write a 1500 word research outline telling us (i) what you're interested in; (ii) why it is exciting for you; (iii) what you have already read about it (iv) your background. We will be looking for your excitement for your chosen topic, your enthusiasm for the opportunity to undertake research and your ability to communicate your ideas clearly. Your chosen topic should be in, or have significant overlap with, engineering, physical sciences or mathematics. There may be the opportunity for it to incorporate other areas where University of Southampton research groups cover D&S interests such as environmental and life sciences, medicine or other social sciences.

Prior to acceptance, shortlisted applicants will be expected to undertake a short, supported internship (subject to COVID pandemic conditions). This will evaluate prior learning and academic training needs, identify and assess potential research projects and supervisor availability.  At the end of the internship, if a final offer is made, the candidate has the flexibility to decline to continue.

Funding

The funding model will be mixed, depending on the circumstances of the candidate.

Entry requirements

Applications are open to candidates who are not transitioning directly from undergraduate or masters programmes to doctoral study. Applicants may hold (at least) one of:
