Silvia Caggiari awarded €5k from the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel

We are delighted to announce that Silvia Caggiari, a EPSRC PhD candidate, based in the Skin Health Group in the Clinical Academic Facility has been awarded €5k from the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) Research Committee to fund a collaborative research project. The EPUAP funding is to facilitate face-to-face meetings of collaborators from Southampton and the University of Grenoble.

Silvia will be paying several visits to the Laboratory TIMC-IMAG Institution, in the Medical Faculty in Grenoble, under the supervision of Professor Yohan Payan, to study fundamental machine learning to complement her PhD project: "Identifying robust algorithms to Monitor Patient mobility in the Community: an indicator of developing pressure ulcers"

 

The fundamental machine learning will support her research to develop a predictive algorithm to identify both the range and frequency of movements of vulnerable individuals supported on a mattress or chair for prolonged periods. It is intended to evaluate the performance of the algorithm on data acquired from clinical colleagues, who manage both patients in the community and a specialised group of spinal cord injured patients (a project associated with Sarah Fryer, a Clinical Academic PhD student). A successful algorithm would provide an early warning system to those individuals at risk of developing pressure ulcers.
