It has been almost 50 years since the release of Erice’s canonical masterpiece, El espíritu de la colmena. Set in Francoist Spain in 1940, Erice's poetic symbolism not only explores the imaginative powers of children, it fosters an exploration of innocence (and gender) as we witness Ana, Erice’s protagonist, feed and protect a soldier hiding in a sheepfold on her father’s bee farm in rural Spain.
Importantly, Ana’s inner life is delicately composed; the film is filled with oneiric, heady images of the farm she lives on and its dusty, yellow landscape serves as a potent backdrop to the light-filled daydreams she finds herself lost within.
I will consider how an eco-critical approach to this seminal film opens up new perspectives on the figure of the child, the matter and objects at its heart, and the intensity of its elemental imagery, thus rethinking the legacy of Erice's cinema through the lens of contemporary film theory and philosophy.
