Economics

Economics Courses

As an Economics student at Southampton, you will learn to apply economic theories and critically evaluate economic policies using a toolkit that can be applied to many different real-world problems.

You will work alongside our leading researchers who are at the forefront of studies such as labour markets, factors affecting the pharmaceutical industry and the movement of populations.

Throughout your time at Southampton, you will be equipped with the quantitative and qualitative skills necessary for a career in economics or finance, and will be able to support these skills with practical and industry experience. You will join our alumni community who have graduated to roles in prestigious organisations including Goldman Sachs, HSBC, PwC, Bloomberg LP and the European Commission.

OUR UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO

As part of our undergraduate community, you will benefit from our research-led teaching and have access to state-of-the-art facilities including our FinLab that is equipped with Bloomberg trading terminals.

You can take your studies even further with internships and work placement schemes; or join one of our exciting student societies including the award-winning social enterprise society Enactus.

You can also choose to take a Year in Employment in your third year or attend a semester studying on exchange at a partner university.

By selecting from our range of optional modules in economics, humanities and social and political sciences, you can broaden your education even further.

OUR POSTGRADUATE PORTFOLIO

You will be taught by researchers who are leaders in the field of economics, are shaping international economic policy and have been nationally recognised for their expertise in areas such as the economics of migration and its global impact.

You will gain advanced training in economics and econometric analysis when you study one of our master’s programmes. You will learn the skills for a career as an economist, a high level position in the financial sector or to undertake independent research.

You can participate in economics experiments in the Social Sciences Experimental Laboratory or use Bloomberg trading terminals in the Financial Laboratory.

OUR INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Living and learning in a different country is a big step, so we strive to ensure that our international students have all the support they need to settle into their new life in the UK. Our friendly International Office staff are always happy to help and can answer any questions you may have about living and studying here.

Welcome Programme

Every September, we arrange a free Welcome Programme for international and EU students, which is designed to help you settle into life in the UK and at the University before your studies begin.

During the Programme, you will meet other undergraduate students and explore the University and the city, so that you know where to worship, relax and shop. You will also meet current international students who will be able to share their experiences and offer advice.

Meet and Greet

We organise a free Meet and Greet service for all new international and EU students in September each year. Our representatives meet you at Heathrow or Gatwick Airport and transport you directly to your accommodation.

Pre-sessional programmes

We offer a wide range of pre-sessional programmes for international students who are planning to come to Southampton to study. These programmes will help you develop the English language skills you will need to follow a degree course or undertake research at a British university.

Visas

Before you join us, you will need to find out about the UK’s immigration procedures well in advance of your arrival in the UK.
