Professor Lisette Schoonhoven’s programme of work focuses on quality and safety of fundamental nursing care, with a particular interest in pressure ulcers and skin health.

Nurses are vital to improving quality and safety of patient care. We need research into fundamental care to support their role.

Lisette leads the Fundamental Care theme of the Wessex CLAHRC in collaboration with Professor Peter Griffiths and also works closely with Professor Dan Bader and Professor Mandy Fader from the Skin Health and Continence research themes.

Lisette’s academic background is in nursing and clinical epidemiology. From 2002 until 2015 Lisette worked as a senior research fellow at the Scientific Institute for Quality of Healthcare (IQ healthcare) at the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, where she remains a visiting professor.

Lisette is also the immediate past president of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) and was the chair of the 2014 international guideline development group. She is Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science and associate editor of the Journal of Tissue Viability.








Research interests

Research interests include risk assessment and prevention of pressure ulcers, incontinence associated dermatitis, improving patient safety and essential nursing care

Lisette manages the fundamental care theme of the NIHR CLAHRC (Wessex) and a group of researchers working on projects related to quality and safety of fundamental nursing care.
