Professor Lisette Schoonhoven is Professor of Nursing within the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southampton. She is based at the Clinical Academic Facility in UHS. Lisette’s expertise covers quality and safety of fundamental nursing care, with a particular interest in pressure ulcers and skin health.

Nurses are vital to improving quality and safety of patient care. We need research into fundamental care to support their role.

 

Lisette Schoonhoven qualified as a nurse in 1989. She worked in nursing practice for 10 years, and combined that with a study in health sciences/nursing science from 1994-1998 at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The clinical topic of her Master's thesis was pressure ulcers in the OR. She continued her research on pressure ulcers at Utrecht University and completed her PhD in 2003. Lisette also has a master in clinical epidemiology. Lisette has worked as a senior research fellow at the Scientific Institute for Quality of Healthcare (IQ healthcare) at the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Her research focussed on quality and safety of nursing care and implementation. She is also an active member of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) and was the international chair of the 2014 international guideline development group. Lisette joined the University of Southampton's Skin Health and Continence Technology group part time in 2012. She was promoted to professor in 2015 and joined the University fulltime in April 2015.

Lisette’s new role as Professor of Nursing involves studies on fundamental nursing care, with a particular interest in skin health. She is part of the Wessex CLAHRC theme on this topic working with Professor Peter Griffiths and also works closely with Professor Dan Bader and Professor Mandy Fader from the Skin Health and Continence research themes. Lisette will continue her international collaboration around pressure ulcers, skin health, quality and safety of nursing care and implementation. She is president of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel.
