Congratulations to Professor Dame Jessica Corner who has been made a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in recognition of her contribution to medical science. Fellows of the Academy are elected for their excellence in medical research, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare.

Our marketing team has produced two new films highlighting the experiences of two of our undergraduate students from BSc Occupational Therapy and BSc Healthcare Science.

Congratulations to Susan Smith who was pronounced winner of the SUSUs Excellence in Teaching ‘Teaching and Learning Lifetime Achievement’ award. The announcement was made last Thursday night at a ceremony honouring academic staff. Susan was chosen from a shortlist of eight candidates.

Principle research fellow, Jane Ball, has written a piece for The Conversation discussing how research shows that nurses are short on time, not compassion.

Congratulations to Dr Emma Boger whose outcome measure, the Southampton Stroke Self-Management Questionnaire (SSSMQ), which she developed for her PhD, supervised by Dr Sara Demain and Professor Sue latter, has been adopted by two major national evaluation projects: The Nuffield Trust is evaluating the impact of stroke support groups on people with stroke and carers; and the Stroke Association is using the patient-report measure to evaluate its Stroke Recovery Service. The SSSMQ measures people's ability to self-manage after stroke.

The project will enable Emma to collaborate between with the two organisations and help provide further evidence of the validity of the SSSMQ.

Congratulations to Professor Mandy Fader who has been chosen as part of a team of authors to receive the 2015 JWOCN (Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing) Research Manuscript Award. Mandy is an author on the publication: Living with a long-term, indwelling urinary catheter: catheter users' experience. The authors will be presented with an award during the 2015 Awards Ceremony at the WOCN Society Annual Conference.

Dr Tracey Harding, lecturer in adult nursing, and BSc Clinical Practice graduate, Claire Thayanukulvat, have had a joint article, ‘Binge drinking and cognitive impairment in young people’, published in the British Journal of Nursing. Tracey supervised Claire’s dissertation (EBP) on which the article is based.

Prof Ann Ashburn, Carolyn Fitton and PhD students Sophia Hulbert and Afrah Alumwais attended the World Confederation for Physiotherapy congress in Singapore during the first week of May and presented their work their work on Parkinson’s and Cerebral Palsy.

On behalf of the Faculty Emeritus Professor Alan Glasper, and third year BSc Nursing (adult field) student Grace Birch, attended the Florence Nightingale annual commemorative service on Sunday at St Margaret's Church in East Wellow. The ceremony was attended by nursing dignitaries from around the world including the President of the Royal College of Nursing and former chief nurse, Dame Yvonne Moores. Grace fulfilled the annual ritual of carrying a lighted candle to the alter, representing the role of Florence Nightingale herself during the Crimean war where carrying a lighted lamp she tended the sick and wounded soldiers.
