The University of Southampton
Health Sciences

Research strategy

Our overall objective was to maintain our position as the leading research intensive Faculty of Health Sciences in the UK.

This was achieved in our REF 2014 result, ranking us joint 1st for impact - this was a tremendous achievement as this unit of assessment included submissions from biomedical science, pharmacy and dentistry which are not represented in our Faculty. In addition, 94% of our research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, cementing us a leading Faculty of Health Sciences.

Our healthcare researchers find evidence based solutions to some of today's most pressing health problems and our impact is proven to fundamentally improve patient experience and drive NHS policy. It is our ambition to grow our research base across disciplines, to continue to produce world-leading research and change healthcare for the better.

It is fantastic to know that the recent REF results, along with independent assessments, have confirmed the indisputable quality and impact of our work. Our research directly feeds back into the education we offer and how we work with NHS partners and other organisations.
