I wanted to study at Southampton, because the History department is staffed by some of the leading researchers and I wanted to learn from them, also I liked the fact the department allowed you to choose individual units, I didn’t want a university telling me what to study.

How did you get interested in History?

I have been interested in History since I was a very young child, one of my earliest memories was a time when my grandfather took me on a tour of HMS Victory.

Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

I wanted to study at Southampton, because the History department is staffed by some of the leading researchers and I wanted to learn from them, also I liked the fact the department allowed you to choose individual units, I didn’t want a university telling me what to study.

What did you like most about your degree programme?

The Dissertation as it allowed the most independent study.

Which historical periods did you like to study?

During my first two years, I studied English history from the Saxons up until Chartism in the 19th Century; I particularly enjoyed my Tudor courses. In my third year I concentrated on modern Anglo-Jewish relations.

What was the best thing about living and studying in Southampton?

I liked the Southampton campus and the very friendly atmosphere.

What have you been doing since you graduated?

After graduating I went on to complete the MA in Jewish History and Culture at Southampton, I then joined the civil service.

Has studying History helped you in your career?

Yes, the subject taught me how to analyse large amounts of evidence and provide high quality written arguments. The subject has allowed me to quickly pick up new pieces of information and provide a rounded opinion.

Are you still interested in History?

Yes, whenever I have enough room on a tube I can be found reading a history book!

Would you recommend studying the subject to other people?

Yes, it’s a good all round degree that gives you transferable skills which a number of employers are looking for.
