Event details

lecture given by Professor Markman Ellis from Queen Mary, University of London

This lecture will examine literary circles centred on Elizabeth Montagu (1718-1800), known as the Queen of the Bluestockings: an intellectual, a published writer, and the organizer of the most celebrated ‘salon' in London in that period. In the 1750s, Montagu and her circle used their correspondence networks to organize and coordinate their reading matter, and to record and regulate their responses to that reading. Professor Ellis's research will demonstrate how Montagu's reading circle began in her family, but expanded to include significant intellectual figures and writers of the mid-eighteenth century.

This lecture will be given in the context of the European COST Action Women Writers in History: Toward a New Understanding of European Literary Culture. The University of Southampton's Dr Gillian Dow (English) is a member of the Management Committee for the project.

Please note places are limited, the booking deadline for this lecture is Monday 31 October.
