Event details

Dance Workshop and Performance featuring the University of Southampton Hartley Danzonera

Danzón is a popular Cuban and Mexican music-dance form. It is a precursor to genres such as mambo, cha-cha-chá and ‘salsa’, and is often played by saxophones, trumpets, trombone, bass, güiro and a virtuosic timpanist.

This free, one-hour event includes a participatory dance workshop led by danzón specialist, Dr Hettie Malcomson and will culminate with the University of Southampton Hartley Danzonera, directed by Jamie Wall, performing live.

All welcome; free admission!

The following clip from Mexico’s Port of Veracruz gives a sense of danzón: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVFL18YLyI0&feature=related

Today's event forms part of MeXsu's (Centre for Mexico-Southampton Collaboration) Mexico Week to celebrate the special 'UK-Mexico Cultural Year 2015'.
