William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor.
Regarded as the greatest dramatist in the English language, he wrote in a wide range of genres and styles, from the volatile, soul-searching tragedies of Hamlet and King Lear, to the sparklingly witty comedies of Twelfth Night and Much Ado About Nothing .
This course will look at Shakespeare’s plays in their original historical and social contexts, but it will also consider why (and how) these plays still mean so much to us today.
The excursion for this topic will be a trip to Shakespeare's Globe theatre plus the opportunity to see a play. Shakespeare's Globe is a unique place dedicated to the exploration of Shakespeare's work.
The academic organising this topic is Dr Stephen Watkins , tutor in English. Find out more about Stephen on our Meet your PGR Tutor page.
