This summer school topic will introduce you to the history of Gothic imagery and ideas as well as to key examples of literature and film normally described as ‘Gothic’. We will consider questions such as: what is (and what is not) Gothic? What makes the Gothic so compelling as a literary and visual mode? How has the Gothic been reinvented over time and in different media and genres. This year we will look at the invention of Gothic in the Middle Ages and changing perceptions of the Medieval Gothic through time; Frankenstein as a Gothic novel and Dracula in novel and Film from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.

The academic organising this topic is Dr Marianne O'Doherty, Associate Professor of Late Medieval Literature and Culture.
