The School of Mathematical Sciences was delighted to host our annual Worshipful Company of Actuaries lecture on 22nd February 2023.

This year, our speaker, Visesh Gosrani, director of Catastrophe Modelling at Cowbell Cyber, delivered an interesting and wide-ranging overview on cyber risk and how cyber risks impact actuaries.

During this talk, Mr Visesh Gosrani covered the recent history of the Cyber market and its projected future growth. Visesh described how Cyber as a peril is different to others, how the market has dealt with this difference to date and what the market is doing going forward. The background to commentary about Cyber potentially being uninsurable and how the market is developing products and techniques to mitigate this was also discussed.

We were pleased to welcome students, lecturers, local actuaries in addition to the representative from the Worshipful Company of Actuaries Mr. Bart Huby. The reception following the lecture afforded our students the opportunity to network with the attending actuaries in an informal setting.

The talk is available to view here:

Two of our current third year students were also awarded prizes for their performance in their second year by Bart Huby, of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries:

  • Jordan Cargill for top performance in second year of the BSc Mathematics with Actuarial Science programme
  • Elze Pranckunaite for top performance in second year of the BSc Economics and Actuarial Science programme

About Visesh Gosrani

Visesh has over 20 years of experience as an Actuary and Chief Risk Officer in the insurance industry. In that time, he has developed a keen interest in the collection and use of behavioural data to better select insureds and to help them reduce their level of risk. Visesh co-founded Shoal, to develop mechanisms to deduce underlying risk preferences for policyholders. These mechanisms were then applied to corporate cyber risk for Cyence, a cyber risk model vendor. He continues his interest in Cyber as Chair of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries Cuber Risk Working Party, as a member of the Advisory Board for Kovrr, a Cyber Risk model vendor and as the Director of Catastrophe Modelling at Cowbell Cyber.
