Dr Itamar Yaakov and Dr Sunny Yu from Mathematical Science, organised the award ceremony for the University of Southampton Mathematics Challenge.

The Maths Challenge is a yearly competition for school children in Year 10 and below. It is part of the outreach efforts in Mathematical Science. Students participating in the challenge solve word based problems with points awarded for demonstrating reasoning skills.

This year's challenge included entries from more than 1300 students representing over 50 schools around the South of England and beyond. The award night was hosted in Avenue Campus and co-organised by Tracy Storey (Events). The participating winners, their parents and a few teachers, some of whom came from as far away as Greece, enjoyed an evening of mathematical recreation and a buffet dinner.

The event culminated with the presentation of certificates and prizes, and a talk by Professor Nils Andersson from Mathematical Science, who became a minor celebrity, entitled ‘Einstein’s Great Idea'.
