Abstract: Property (T) is a rigidity property of locally compact groups. It can be defined as the existence of a fixed point for every affine isometric action of a given group on a Hilbert space. In this talk I will discuss property (T) and its applications. I will also present the recent computer-assisted proof (joint with Marek Kaluba and Narutaka Ozawa) of property (T) for the automorphism group of the free group on 5 generators. The proof uses semidefinite programming, a branch of convex optimization.
