Abstract: We present some recent results in automatic continuity which arise by generalizing classical arguments. For example, every abstract group homomorphism from a completely metrizable topological group to Thompson's group F has open kernel. The talk will include some historical background and discussion of key ingredients in such arguments. Joint work with Greg Conner.
