Frederick Loewe’s ‘My Fair Lady’, translated into German by Robert Gilbert

After her first monograph, Narrating the Holocaust (Vienna 1995/London 2005), Andrea Reiter worked for years on a scholarly biography of the German-Jewish writer Hans Sahl. Sahl emigrated from Germany in 1933 and arrived, via Paris, in New York where he earned his life as a journalist and a translator (“Endstation Sehnsucht” is his German version of Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar named desire”).  Sahl and a number of other German-speaking emigrants, notably Robert Gilbert, used their linguistic skills in the United States as a creative instrument that helped them to find their place between Europe and America, and they discussed topics from Holocaust memory to the emergence of a new Jewish culture in Germany and Austria – topics of great importance for our late colleague and friend Andrea Reiter to whose memory this lecture is dedicated.
