Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation is combined with a time-of-flight analyser and is most commonly used to provide analysis of biomolecules, polymers, dendrimers and other large molecules on a real mass scale. MALDI-TOF may also be used to analyse small molecules that may not ionise by other techniques.
Variety of matrices are available and all samples should be submitted with the choice of a preferred matrix clearly stated on the sample submission form. In all other cases the selection of a suitable matrix will be at the discretion of the mass spectrometrist.
