Dr Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President of Shell Shipping and Maritime, an alumnus of Civil Engineering, visited the University on 9 February to deliver lectures to research scholars and undergraduate students in engineering and the marine and maritime domains.

He gave three separate seminars on:

1. The scientific and technological challenges facing the maritime industry in the next 10 years.

2. The roles that engineers can play in technology-led organisations such as Shell and the role of graduate engineers.

3. How to use the University environment to prepare yourselves with the skills and knowledge for employment.

Dr Henderson drew extensively on his own career and experiences as well as his current leading position in the industry. He highlighted the challenges for engineers relating to safety, the environment, efficiency and cost, as well as the way disruptive technologies will affect what is a traditional business.

The well attended lectures were most stimulating, generating considerable discussions in the Q&A sessions.
