Water transportation in the Amazon will be presented along with the navigation conditions, the types of vessels used and the main characteristics of ports and waterways. The use of alternative materials to replace wood in shipbuilding Amazon, which is the material used in 70% of the fleet will be discussed. Verification methods for estimating power for the hull shape of the vessels of the Amazon will be shown, where a comparison is made between the power results obtained with the use of the Towing Tank and prediction methods power.

Also presented will be the main lines of research developed at the Federal University of Pará, Brazil.

Speaker information

Professor Hito Braga de Moraes, University of Para, Brazil. Prof. Hito Braga de Moraes graduated in Civil and Naval Engineering. He has a Masters and Doctorate in Naval and Oceanic Engineering from COPPE/UFRJ. He is founder of the the Faculty of Naval Engineering of UFPA in 2005, Director of Naval Faculty of Engineering UFPA, Professor at the Federal University of Para (UFPA), Director of the Pan American Institute of Naval Engineering (IPEN). His research interest is in the area of passenger vessels and cargo Amazon, ports, waterways and water transport. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton.
