Rhys Llewellyn Thomas, ESRC funded Postgraduate Researcher in Economics at the University of Southampton.

I am an applied Economist completing a Ph.D. at the University of Southampton. My speciality is in applying econometric methods to health-related research questions. I have a particular interest in health-related inequality and public policy, however, my job market paper has more of a behavioural focus. 
 
Before starting my Ph.D. studies, I obtained a BSc. and MSc. in Economics both also at the University of Southampton. Both my PhD and Master’s degrees are funded through a 1+3 scholarship from the University of Southampton ESRC DTC.

Between November 2018 and April 2019 I was on a secondment at the Department for Education (UK), where I spent some time researching school exclusions and factors associated with disadvantaged pupil performance.

Research interests

The focus of my PhD thesis is health economics, however there are also substantial public economics and policy elements throughout. My speciality is applying microeconometric methods to make causal inferences in my research.

The three papers of my thesis are distinctly different but are related by the econometric approaches I use to answering each question.  The first paper of my thesis estimates the redistributive effects of publicly financed healthcare, the second estimates the spillover effects of a diabetes diagnosis and the third analyses the health implications of an expansion in the supply of primary care physicians.

I hope to continue applying my strong quantitative skillset to health-related research questions upon the completion of my PhD thesis, which is expected to be in 2021.
