Research degrees

Postgraduate research opportunities are available for students interested in exploring many important areas of the social sciences.

PhDs are offered in criminology, demography, economics, gerontology, politics, social policy, sociology, and statistics. We have well-known and extremely active research groups in each division and also host several internationally significant research centres. Your supervisor will be one of our leading academics.

Our postgraduate research students can use the wide range of University facilities and resources available for social scientists including our intranet (SocSciNet), IT networks for research support, easy access to workstations, an internet café, technical support from our iSolutions team and a print and copy room. You will be provided with a PC and office space and receive an allowance for photocopying and printing.

Studying for the MPhil/PhD is a more mature experience and closer to the real working and social world.
