Phase I of the study will run until Spring 2015.
We will talk to teenagers with asthma, their parents or carers, and their healthcare professionals. The aim of these discussions will be to understand what teenagers need to successfully self-manage their asthma and what healthcare professionals can do to optimise this self-management.
Older teenagers will be invited to join focus groups, younger teenagers will take part in 1:1 interviews as this age group tends to say very little in group sessions. From this information we plan to generate a new approach to managing teenagers with asthma that will facilitate self-management. This new approach will be reviewed by adolescent patients, their parents or carers and their healthcare professionals in a second round group meetings and 1:1 interviews to obtain feedback and allow the approach to be optimised.
Improving healthcare professionals approach to adolescent patients may result in better engagement, greater ownership of their healthcare and improved self-management skills. This ought to result in adolescent patients having improved asthma control and less morbidity and mortality.
