Summer schools

Summer school programmes give students the chance to complete a shorter period of study abroad, normally four weeks over the summer break. The University of Southampton welcomes incoming students to their Summer Programmes, as well as promoting summer programmes for outgoing students on behalf of partner universities. Some of these programmes entitle University of Southampton students to a full or partial fee waiver as part of our international agreements.

(If you receive other types of funding on offer, the scholarship allocated will be adjusted accordingly.) Most of the courses taught at our Partner Universities Summer Programmes are credit-bearing, although these credits will not be transferred to your degree.

  • The University of Sydney

Discover Sydney, Australia’s most liveable city and the friendliest city for tourists while taking part at the University of Sydney Short Term Programme during the summer.

Students can choose from 6 intensive units of study. Each unit of study is taught in an intensive format whilst maintaining credit point values and academic integrity. Most unit of study options provide hands-on experiential learning in an Australian cultural context. Students can choose either 1 or 2 units of study, one of which can be our credit-bearing Internship.

  • Deakin University

Deakin University is offering two Australian Studies Programmes between 9th July - 27th July and then 6th August - 24th August in 2018. Hosted at their Deakin Warrnambool Campus just 3 hours by train from Melbourne. The programme is designed to provide an insight into the historical and contemporary elements of Australian society with students learning about history, politics, culture, landscape and indigenous cultures. BERMUDA

  • Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences

Each summer, BIOS offers a suite of courses for both undergraduate and graduate students that capitalizes upon the expertise of BIOS faculty and visiting scientists. These courses, listed in the link below, provide many students the opportunity to study topics in marine science that might not be offered within the curricula of their home institutions. Each course comprises lectures, laboratory exercises, and complementary field components that build upon what is learned in the classroom. Partial scholarships may be available to all students.

BRAZIL

  • UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies

The Summer School on Brazilian Studies at The Federal University of Minas Gerais aims to give students from all over the world an understanding of key aspects of Brazil from distinct perspectives. Lectures will cover the underpinnings of Brazilian politics, history, foreign relations, geography,law, economy, arts and culture. The Summer School will take place from July 16th to July 27th.

CANADA

  • Dalhousie University - International Summer Institute on Migration and Identity in Europe and Canada

Issues of identity and migration have dominated politics and news coverage in recent years in North America and Europe. This intensive, summer course will bring together students and researchers from both sides of the Atlantic. You will explore and compare policies in Canada and the EU. You will also make the most of your location in Halifax, an historic gateway to Canada, with field trips that will allow you to engage with local minority communities and institutions like the Canadian Museum of Immigration.

  • University of British Columbia

The Vancouver Summer Programme is a 4 week academic programme offered by various Faculties at the University of British Columbia. With over 57 different subjects and Summer School packages, the programme offers the opportunity for students to take 2 academic courses in various University of British Columbia Faculties.   • University of Victoria Wellington

This year, the University of Victoria-Wellingtons award winning Gustavson School of Business will be holding a 3 - 4 week long Summer Programme in July and August. Programmes are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students with 2 courses being offered: International Summer Institute for Business Management and the Summer Graduate Business Studies programme.

  • McGill University School of Continuing Studies 

Offering prestige, culture and fun, McGill University’s School of Continuing Studies provides international students with unique opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom and experience something new. With programs ranging from Aerospace Engineering to Intensive French Language and Culture, McGill's 15 courses run at various dates between April 30th- August 24th. Students who register before March 31st will save $400 CAD as part of their Early-Bird Special.

UCI is offering a rich academic program and co-curricular activities that allow you to succeed in your studies while experiencing American culture and university life first-hand. Their Summer Sessions offers more than 600 courses each summer, in a wide variety of disciplines. Courses are offered over five different sessions of varying lengths—the first session usually begins towards the end of May, and all sessions have ended by mid-August. University of Southampton students can benefit from early registration.   • Washington University in St Louis (Missouri) 

Their International Summer Study is a 5-week program in which students enroll in two courses, learn about graduate and professional study in the United States, and explore American Culture. Their small classes and friendly campus provide an ideal introduction to American education. There are a number of $2,500 scholarships available to non-American students.

The program balances the course load with opportunities to explore and have fun. Students will interact with fellow classmates, professors, and leaders in the St. Louis region to build their global network and explore our grand city. St. Louis is truly a quintessential metropolitan American city with professional baseball, amusement parks, live musical theatre, and more.

  • The George Washington University International Summer Programme (Washington , DC)

This is an opportunity for visiting undergraduate and graduate students to engage in coursework at GW and be part of an international community. Intake is split into two sessions- Session 1 spans from May 21st- June 29th, and the application deadline is April 1st. Session 2 is July 1st- August 10th, and the application deadline is May 1st.

  • UC San Diego Summer Session

The University of California San Diego is offering over 600 courses from over 40 disciplines this summer. Sessions run for 5 weeks, with various dates between July 2nd and September 21st. Students are invited to apply online via the UC San Diego Summer Session website starting from April.

Colombia

  • Universidad de Los Andes Bogota 'Peacebuilding in Colombia'

Offered by the world-renowned Political Science department at the Universidad de Los Andes (Uniandes) in Bogota, the program explores the recent history of the Colombian conflict and the present challenges of peacebuilding in the country. Open to students from all disciplines, it is aimed at those with an interest in International Relations and Conflict Resolution. The intensive three-week study programme consists of three modules including a history of the Colombian armed conflict, peace negotiations in Colombia and building a lasting peace. The programme also offers cultural visits and trips including to the International Centre for Transitional Justice. The programme will run from 11th June - 29th June with accommodation provided. Mexico 

  • Universidad Autonoma de Mexico (UAEM) Mexican Summer Program

The Mexican Summer Program offers an intensive three week-course of Communicative Spanish Language along with a full Mexican life experience. The course also offers Mexican culture workshops and some other Mexican daily life activities, as well as short travels to tourist hotspots that will ensure a full experience in Mexico.

CHINA

  • Study China Programme 

The Study China Programme is managed by The University of Manchester and funded by the Government department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

This distinctive three week programme offers the opportunity to interact with Chinese students, academic staff, local families and businesses, providing profound access to this fascinating country. Throughout the programme you will be immersed in a vibrant campus environment at a leading Chinese University, ensuring that your Study China experience is truly unforgettable.

You will complete an intensive Chinese Mandarin course designed to develop your written and spoken language skills. We welcome applications from students with any level of language experience, from absolute beginners with no prior experience to fluent speakers. You will be placed in a tiered class depending on your ability.

Your Study China experience will not be confined to classroom learning. Through a curriculum of workshops, trips and excursions you will be introduced to the real China.

  • Xiamen University Intellectual Property Summer School

Xiamen University, designated as one of China's higher-level universities, invite students from across the globe to spend 10 days in July (9th-19th) at their Intellectual Property Research Institute (IPRI). The Summer School will invite highly qualified legal professionals and renowned IP experts to impart their first-hand experience and insights. Additionally, site visits in well-known enterprises, staying with local Chinese families, as well as other special activities provided will bring you better understanding of Chinese culture and IP law in China.

  • Zhejiang University - “Entrepreneurship in China & OBOR” International Summer School

A unique three-week program offering participants an opportunity to understand the entrepreneurial China. The course combined fieldwork with courses incorporating observation from real business settings and networking events with entrepreneurs. At the end of the program, participants will be required to create their own Chinese business initiative and are required to present it to a panel of judges as part of their assessment.

  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University - International Summer School on Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering and Mechanics

Naval architecture, ocean engineering and mechanics cover a wide range of knowledge and emphasizes on both theory and practice. It involves scientific principles, innovation, imagination together with the fundamentals of mathematics, physics, mechanics, oceanography, etc. New concepts, technologies and methodologies on the subject are constantly emerging. Since 2009, the International Summer School on Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering and Mechanics has been providing a valuable learning and mutual exchange opportunity for students to broaden their vision and enrich their experiences.

This summer school provides excellent opportunities for students to learn about the latest theories and applications on naval architecture, ocean engineering and mechanics through academic and cultural immersion. A wide range of courses in various disciplines will be provided by the world-class professionals and researchers. In addition, local excursions, cultural activities and field trips are also available to the participants from all around the world.

  • Sichuan University Immersion Program

Our University enjoys a long standing and mutually beneficial relationship with Sichuan University (SCU) which is located in Chengdu, a famous historic and cultural city known as "the land of abundance" in West China.

The University Immersion Program is a two week course running from July 8th- July 21st, and is designed to give short courses and lectures to both domestic and international students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This program aims to bring together students worldwide, to give all participants an opportunity to associate and make friends with each other, and stimulate their global awareness and inter-cultural communication.

  • CUHK Summer School

The Chinese University of Hong Kong runs a summer school with a diverse range of courses available. We are able to send limited number of University of Southampton students to this summer school with waived tuition fees so please make sure you apply as early as possible. Please email studyabroad@soton.ac.uk if you intend to apply, so that we can nominate you as an exchange student.

You will cover the costs of international and domestic travel arrangements and associated costs, as well as expenses involving housing, meals, local transportation, personal expenses, passport, visa applications, travel and medical insurance, and all other general living expenses.

  • CUHK Summer UG Research Programme

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has established the Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) to allow undergraduate students from its overseas and non-Chinese partner universities to undertake a short-term research attachment at CUHK during the summer. Apart from the academic component introducing various aspects of a research career, the programme also offers orientation and cultural activities to enrich the learning experience of the students while they are in Hong Kong.

Participants will be paying an administration fee (no tuition fees will be charged) and they will be responsible for making their own international and domestic travel arrangements and associated costs, as well as expenses involving housing, meals, local transportation, personal expenses, passport, visa applications, travel and medical insurance, and all other general living expenses.

  • HKUST Summer Programme 

The HKUST International Summer Exchange Program (ISP) is tuition fee waived for a limited number of students from the University of Southampton. However HKUST will charge a basic program fee which includes accommodation and visa costs (flights and living costs are not included).  The program aims to create a rewarding exchange experience for students from around the world. It comprises high-quality courses taught by HKUST’s top-notch academics, enhancing students’ understanding in their respective areas of study, and chances to participate in local excursions that enable students to gain insight into the Asian culture.   • Lingnan University Summer School 

The Lingnan University Summer School tuition fees are waived for a limited number of University of Southampton students. The courses are offered under an intensive mode and with teaching hours comparable to regular undergraduate courses. Moreover, summer school students are offered to use the University facilities during the study period. Students can enjoy hostel life and experience Lingnan's unique liberal arts education.   • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University International Summer Programme 

This program is tuition fee waived for a limited number of students from the University of Southampton, although HKPU will be charging an Administrative fee for visa application and delivery. Join and gain an invaluable exchange experience with students from all over the world; take part in a variety of social events and talk series by distinguished speakers to expand your horizon. HKPU also organises educational field trips to Hong Kong / Macau / Mainland China before or after the formal teaching weeks to complement and maximize your learning experience. Students are also guaranteed on campus accommodation.

The University of Hong Kong provides learning experiences for undergraduate and postgraduate local and visiting students.  Students will be immersed in an international environment and taught by top scholars and researchers.  You will be able to explore your careers through internship opportunities, and have a taste of global adventure by joining the study tours and multi-location programmes.

TAIWAN

  • National Taiwan University Plus Academy Summer + Programs 

This program enable students from all over the world to gain first-hand experience, and cultural exploration – all within an international setting based on academic and personal growth. With programs that cover topics from Mandarin Chinese to agriculture, biotechnology, leadership, and economics, Summer Plus is sure to have something for everyone. Not only do these programs allow students to expand their cultural experiences, they give them the tools to succeed in diverse environments by encouraging travel, dialogue, and hands-on experiences in several fields of study.

  • National Cheng Kung University International Summer School

The NCKU summer school is a course that covers a wide-range of topics such as energy, water and biomaterial. Aiming at giving students basic concepts of sustainable thinking from interdisciplinary lectures, this course explores the systematic use of technology with business and daily life, and the impacts of technology on individuals and the environment. In addition to teaching theory in class, NCKU provide company visits and hands-on activities for participating students. The course runs from August 2nd-17th, and the application deadline is June 15th. See here for more information.

JAPAN

  • Japan Amgen Scholars Program - Kyoto University and The University of Tokyo

KJSP is a two-week, intensive English-taught program which offers lectures on a variety of topics, off-campus activities, networking opportunities and more to present a broad and yet engaging look into Japan's culture and society.Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo are offering all-expenses paid research summer schools for Undergraduates. The Program seeks to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to pursuing science or engineering careers and to spark the interest and broaden the perspective of students considering scientific careers. Ultimately, the Program aims to increase the number of students pursuing advanced training and careers in the sciences.

  • Keio University Summer Program

Keio University, the oldest private higher learning institution in Japan, is offering a two month program (June-July) to study and experience life in Japan. Undergraduate students are invited to take part in this program offering courses on Arts, Culture & Cross-cultural Understanding, Religion & Thought, History, Business & Economy, Law and Japanese Language. No Japanese proficiency is required as all lectures are conducted in English. All applications are to be submitted by the student via the Keio University Application Form online. Application deadline is February 22nd.

Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, is offering a summer school with option to take academic courses, Japanese courses or a combination of both.   • The Nagoya University Summer Intensive Program

This program provides students with a rare opportunity to connect with and play a role in automobile technology. Unlike many study opportunities abroad, the NUSIP program is led exclusively by faculty, ensuring the same quality education that students encounter on their own campus.   • Yokohama National University Summer Program

Yokohama National University are providing Japanese culture classes and a first-hand experience of campus life for international students during this two-week program (running July 3rd- July 13th). Besides attending the lectures, YNU will also be providing hands-on learning experiences such as Japanese brush calligraphy and flower arrangement. Visits to local museums and historical sites alongside volunteer YNU students are also included, as well as a weekend home-stay experience with a Japanese family. Students are required to apply online; the application deadline is March 30th.

SOUTH KOREA

  • KAIST International Summer School (KISS)

This summer experience at KAIST is an unique opportunity for students, from Korea and abroad, to interlace a tapestry of academic exchange through creative teaching and learning. There are a wide range of courses that students can choose from. This programme is tuition fee waived for a limited number of students from the University of Southampton but applicants must pay for the application and programme fee.

  • Yonsei Internaional Summer School

SNU International Summer School offers an exceptional opportunity for students to study an intensive five-week summer program led by distinguished scholars. This program is designed to offer international students an opportunity to experience student-life in this culture-rich kingdom, in an academic setting which is stimulating, challenging and progressive.

One of the most important and engaging components of these courses is that learning is not limited to the classroom. Through an innovative course incorporating experiential learning, and explorations of the communities and habitats in and around Brunei, students become participants in, rather than mere observers of, this dynamic yet well-preserved environment.

  • Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya 

CommTECH is an opportunity for university students, academics, and professionals from all over the world to learn about community and global issues through a variety of insightful but fun activities. The program includes courses, visit and discussion with government and non-government agencies, society engagement, Indonesian Language course, learning traditional music and dances, visit to main tourist destinations, and for sure tasting delicious Indonesian food. The aim of the program is to facilitate a broad opportunity to better understand ITS's expertises and technology implementation in the society while visiting, discovering, and experiencing Indonesia's diverse heritage and culture. It will also open up an opportunity to exchange ideas and develop a mutual vision for the future of our community.

  • Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Summer School Program 

This year, UTM is offering a summer school titled "Mountain Of Treasure At The Tip Of Mainland Asia". This summer school offers you the opportunity to study at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and immerse yourself in Malaysian culture as part of the 10-day programme. This programme includes community service activities including an opportunity to teach English to local children living in rural Malaysia. SINGAPORE

  • FASStrack Asia: the Summer School. National University of Singapore 

This program is offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. You will be attending classes held in a dynamic and multi-cultural learning environment with NUS and international students from various universities from all over the world. FASStrack Asia comprises courses from the Faculty’s Asian Studies Di-vision, Humanities Division and the Social Sciences Division. Courses are focused on Asia, and some of these courses will feature a 7-10 days’ field trip to the country of study. Their Centre for Language Studies will also offer relevant Asian language courses that will complement the field trips for a comprehensive learning experience and in-depth cultural immersion.

  • EM Strasbourg Summer Schools

  • ESTACA - Summer Programme in CFD Applications in Aeronautical Engineering
 The programme is for students in at least their 3rd year of an engineering bachelor degree and runs from 2nd July 2018 - 27th July 2018. The aim of the programme is for students to learn how to operate CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tools to be able to understand and predict aeronautical systems. As the University of Southampton is a partner, our students benefit from a reduced programme fee. More information can be found here.
 
The application deadline is the 1st May (for non-European citizens) and 31st May 2018 (for European citizens).
 
  • Université Paris Diderot Summer School

  The Paris Diderot Summer School is a program for all international students. It offers French language training and a discovery of French culture in total immersion for three weeks. Running from July 2nd-20th, the program includes an intensive French language course, as well as guided tours around various historical and cultural points of interest around the centre of Paris. Students submit their own applications online via the Paris Diderot Summer School website. Application deadline is May 1st.

  • University of Rouen Normandy- French language Arts and Culture in Normandy

The University of Rouen Normandy offers complete immersion into French culture through a unique and dynamic linguistic and cultural experience. The programme includes an intensive French language class, as well as a backstage Opera tour, wine and cheese tasting session, and a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts.   • Bayreuth University Summer School

The Bayreuth International Summer School consists of six different courses held over the same time period. All courses are conducted in English by international visiting professors and will take place over a period of two weeks in July. Participants have the opportunity to theoretically and practically engage in various seminars and discussions for around 6 hours a day, learning and working in small groups of max. 15-20 international participants.

  • University of Bonn - International Summer Courses

The University of Bonn is offering two Summer School programmes for international students:

  1. The Summer School on Intellectual Property addresses graduate and postgraduate students from any field of study. It introduces students to the main areas of Intellectual Property and examines important Intellectual Property issues. 
  2. The International Summer Course for German Language and Cultural Studies - this programme aims to offer students the opportunity to learn the German language or to improve existing language skills, gaining insight into German cultural studies, participating in interesting excursions, getting to know the internationally well-reputed University of Bonn and the city of Bonn, and at making new contacts and fostering new friendships.

This year, Cologne Business School and Universitate de Vic are jointly running the Business Innovation Summer Programme which will be based in both cities. The programme will run from 1st July - 21st July and is aimed at Undergraduate students studying an international business management, marketing or advertising degree.

  • Trier University International Summer School

The Trier University International Summer School is an intensive course providing lessons in German language, as well as further education in didactics and methodology of German as a Foreign Language.   • Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB)- Summer School "Cultural Heritage Marketing for Sustainable Tourism"

This summer school is held in Athens in July and lasts 12 days.

The course introduces trainees to the basic concepts of marketing in the cultural heritage sector by paying particular attention to the environment in which an organization operates. The environmental factors that have an influence on the formulation of the marketing strategy are examined with particular emphasis being placed on the history of a place-destination along with the existence of monuments, museums and cultural activities in this destination.

Participants will be offered the opportunity to be shown around the museums, archaeological sites and places in Greece.

  • Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Summer School in Portuguese

FSCH/Nova offers the Portuguese Language course for foreign students, which will take place from 3rd to 28th July.

This summer course, which is worth 4 ECTS, is aimed at non-native speakers of Portuguese who wish to learn or improve their knowledge of Portuguese language and culture. It also includes workshops in Portuguese language, sessions on Portuguese culture and cultural activities.

The course is split into 5 levels: Beginners (A1) - Elementary (A2) - Intermediate (B1) - Upper Intermediate (B2) - Advanced (C1)

Students can pre-enrol in one level, but will be offered a placement test prior to the beginning of the course. Enrolment is open until 30th June.

Istanbul Aydin University's Summer School Program  offers a range of courses across a variety of faculties. The program fee includes the tuition fee, course materials, 14 nights superior hostel accommodation in shared rooms, free museum entrance cards, 2 weekend sightseeing tours, a graduation ceremony and Delightful Istanbul Program amenities.

Istanbul, with its historical peninsula, numerous scenic and historical beauties, is a magnificently unique city that has been capital to many civilizations from past to present and still continues to be home to residents from all over the world. This rooted city, with a history dating back 300 thousand years, constitutes a mosaic of many civilizations and cultures combined.  As well as being one of the most attractive cities to visit, Istanbul is now becoming a higher education destination for international students.
