Office and consultation hours
Introduction
Office hours and email contact
In teaching weeks, full-time academic staff who are also academic advisers have two regular drop-in 'office hours'; other tutors have one office hour. You can also arrange appointments with us outside these times, but it helps us to work more efficiently if you keep to them where possible. If you have problems in contacting a member of staff, the English and History Office will pass on a message for you.
You can also get in touch with us by email (contact details on the list below); emails will normally be responded to in termtime within two working days.
Essay consultation
In addition to these regular office hours, each module will have one timetabled 'consultation week', with no formal teaching, in the second half of the semester; the timing of this week may vary from module to module, depending on its pattern of assessment. It will be used for scheduled one-to-one meetings with your seminar tutors to discuss the written work you have done so far and review your progress. There will also be no formal teaching in Week 12 of each semester (this is to give you the necessary space to complete written work and/or revise for exams), but tutors will hold office hours and be available by email or by appointment.
Academic advisers
This is a new role for members of academic staff, replacing the previous 'personal tutor' role; it is part of a School structure which has been designed to respond to broader changes in the University system, making our pastoral care of students more streamlined and professional. You will, as before, be assigned to a particular member of academic staff who acts as a permanent point of reference, providing you with individual support and advice as needed; but the 'academic adviser' will look primarily after your academic needs, liaising if necessary with other designated members of staff (see our page on 'Support for Students') on more complex pastoral problems. You're welcome to contact your adviser by email, or visit him/her in office hours or by appointment.
Note: these 'office hours' may vary because of external factors (e.g. illness, emergency meetings, one-off commitments elsewhere); if you're making a special trip, it's advisable to check with the tutor in advance. Click on the names of staff for full contact details of permanent staff, including room locations, and email addresses of temporary tutors.
