A Sustainable Halloween

Published: 31 October 2023

Sustainable Development Goals Project Officer for the Sustainability and Resilience Institute and Environmental Science PhD Researcher Alice Brock has written an article for The Conversation giving readers ‘top tips’ on how to enjoy Halloween sustainably. The article provides five easy tips; such as turning your pumpkin into pumpkin pie instead of carving it and then throwing it into landfill (where it will rot creating the greenhouse gas methane), reusing existing clothing to make your costume and being mindful of your overall consumption over Halloween, encouraging readers to reflect on what they actually need.

SDG Officer Alice Brock said “we don’t always consider the impacts of our behaviours and consumption around times like Halloween, but for example in the UK alone it’s estimated 8 million pumpkins are thrown away, mostly going to landfill. With a few simple modifications to our behaviour and really considering what we are consuming we can still have a fun Halloween without negatively impacting the world around us.”
