I find making friends much easier if you join a society. I met one of my best friends in the U.K. at the society’s welcoming event. Also, I think it’s important to keep an eye on student events which can be a great way to have some fun and meet new friends. I attended Bunfight Clubs and Societies Fair, Freshers Fair, K-pop Party, etc., and it was helpful.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Southampton?

What I liked most about the University of Southampton's Master of Music were the study modules and the reputation of the music school. As I also thought about after graduation, reputation of music school was highly important. And I always had this desire to have a good environment that I can focus on music. This course was full of what I wanted to learn.

What do you enjoy the most about living in Southampton or Winchester?

I enjoy going to the different cities especially during the weekends. For example, I’ve visited Bath, London, Winchester, and Bournemouth several times. I really enjoy visiting Bournemouth and London, which I visited six and seven times each in five months. I also enjoy going to the Mayflower Park which I can see the view of some ferry ships. It’s a nice place to relax when the weather is good. If you like the sea breeze, I highly recommend visiting there.

Have you undertaken any work placements, collaborations with industry, internships, or volunteering? How has this enhanced your experience?

I have recently become one of the Student Representatives for the PGT department of music, which gives me the opportunity to provide feedback on the course. Additionally, I have been volunteering to gain experiences that I never had back in Korea. These experiences give me confidence and enhance my speaking skills.

What do you think you have gained from your degree that you wouldn’t have developed without it?

I have developed a proactive approach to solving difficulties. Through overcoming such obstacles and stress, my confidence has grown. For example, finding food to eat when I first came to the UK, trying every possible method to resolve troubles with a neighbour, preparing for recitals, and successfully completing the first semester have all contributed to have a high sense of self-efficacy. Also, I expected my horizon to broaden through meeting people from diverse backgrounds, and I’ve experienced this very much.

What are you most proud of from your time at the University of Southampton so far?

I gained a sense of British accent thanks to my best friend, and I have built my portfolio by becoming a student representative and participating volunteer work. I’ve been also visiting Southampton Networking Group, pushing myself out of comfort zone.

How have the people you have met at Southampton changed your life?

I really thank to my best friend who is an undergraduate home student. Also, I thank to the well-being team who were always a very good listener.

What will you do with your degree after you have finished your studies?

My goals after graduating are to continue to perform and eventually become a professor. My life time goal is to become a global artist. I've been a professional musician since 2016, I really love being on stage, and I really think I'm meant to be there. I look forward to experiencing more challenges after graduation, whether it's Korea, U.K or U.S, I'll try everything to become a successful musician.

Can you sum up your University of Southampton experience in three words?

Passionate, relaxed, supportive

How has the funding enhanced your experience as a student at the University of Southampton?

I’ve been to international scholars' event and had enjoyed very much. I hope there could be more events with scholars.

What advice do you have for future applicants who may wish to apply for this scholarship or bursary?

I recommend carefully considering your strengths and goals and keeping them in mind as you progress through the course.
