Programme aims
This new online collaborative programme between the University of Southampton and the British Council will lead to the award of a free-standing Postgraduate Certificate in English Language Teaching awarded by the University of Southampton.
The programme has been developed in close collaboration and combines the strengths of each partner. The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organization for educational opportunities and cultural relations and operates an extensive teacher training and education programme.
Modern Languages at Southampton has strong research interests in second language acquisition and in language teacher development and has extensive experience of designing online interactive materials.
- Your course will be delivered by an experienced e-tutor team in the British Council's Open and Distance Learning Unit in Mexico according to standards agreed with the University
- You will be guided by specially designed interactive course materials in a personalised virtual learning environment with full access to the University of Southampton's online library resources, including ebooks.
- Following a flexible and well-supported online course, you will be able to combine part-time study with other commitments
- There will be regular guest lectures and podcasts by internationally renowned staff from the University of Southampton
- As an e-participant you will have experience of online tutor-led discussion forums, real-time "chat" and small-group discussions
- On successful completion of the certificate and having met the appropriate criteria in your work, you will have the opportunity to proceed to the second semester of the MA in English Language Teaching: Online since the certificate constitutes half of the taught components of the MA.
Programme structure
All teaching will be online and you will take four modules, normally over 2 semesters:
- Communicative Approaches to English for Specific Purposes
- Language Analysis for Teaching
- Communicative Methodology in English for Specific Purposes
- E-learning for English Language Teaching
