Postgraduate research opportunities
If you are thinking about doing research in modern languages you will find us an excellent choice. We have an ability to offer supervision on a number of areas not normally found in UK universities.
Modern Languages research in European Studies was ranked second in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with 30% of our research judged to be world-class. Modern Languages research areas cover French, German, Spanish Portuguese and Latin American Studies, Portuguese and Linguistics with particular focus on Film and Television, Linguistics, Literature, Culture, Society, Politics, History, Anthropology and Transnational Studies.

Along with your application for a research degree in Modern Languages / Transnational Studies / Applied Linguistics, we expect you to prepare and submit an outline research proposal.

Research Centres
Following university restructuring, the Centre for Applied Language Research and the Centre for Transnational Studies were established in autumn 2003 by the new School of Humanities as a focus for postgraduate teaching and research.
