AHRC Postgraduate Studentships
The University of Southampton was successful in applying for a Block Grant Partnership (BGP), a series of awards allocated to various subjects within Humanities over a five-year period.

The Discipline of Modern Languages is pleased to announce the following additional studentships for MA and PhD students.
Students of all nationalities may apply for the following studentships (all fees refer to 2009/10, the studentships will be in the amount of the respective 2010/11 fees):
MA Bursaries
ML is offering various PGI bursaries of between £1,000 and £3,500, including three named scholarships Brumfit (in Applied Linguistics), Blue (in Applied Linguistics or ELT) and Labanyi (Transnational Studies) worth the equivalent to UK/EU full-time fees each. Any student accepted on the MA programmes in Transnational Studies, Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching, English Language Teaching, and Applied Linguistics (MRes) will be eligible to be considered for these if they are not receiving any other external funding. The successful candidates will be selected for the quality of their application, according to their performance in their first degrees and other relevant studies.
Teaching Assistantships in French, German and Spanish
The Discipline of Modern Languages has a number of Teaching Assistantships in French, German and Spanish. They are normally for the duration of three years. Successful applicants will be expected to complete a PhD in any aspect of French, German or Spanish (including Latin American) studies and carry out up to six hours of language teaching. They will receive an annual maintenance grant equivalent to AHRC funding (currently about £ 12,900) and fees will be waived.
Requirements: native or near-native French/German/Spanish language proficiency; MA or equivalent; teaching experience, ideally in the appropriate language would be an advantage.
ESRC Quota Award Studentship in Applied Linguistics
The Centre for Applied Language Research is offering one Studentship. This award provides full fees + maintenance and allowances at Research Council rates, either for a 3 year programme leading to PhD, or for a 1+3 (4 year) programme including both the one year research training MA programme, MA Applied Linguistics Research Methodology (MAALRM), and a subsequent PhD programme. UK/ EU candidates holding a good honours degree in a relevant subject area + research potential (1+3), or a recognised research training masters degree in applied linguistics/ sociolinguistics + research potential (+3 award) are eligible.
Archival Scholarship
The University holds several world-renowned archival collections; the largest one of them is the Parkes Archive for the study of Jewish and Non-Jewish Relations. In recent years, the Parkes Collections have developed as a place of deposit for archives concerning nineteenth and twentieth century Anglo-Jewry, and the Parkes Library offers an outstanding collection of books and journals including material on German Jewry and Holocaust Studies. A more recent collection is contained in the Basque Children’s archive. The University offers one annual PhD studentship comprising maintenance for three years (AHRC equivalent) and fees.

Camoes Institute Postgraduate Bursary
As part of a new agreement with the Instituto Camoes, we are pleased to announce a yearly postgraduate research bursary, worth 500 Euros per month, for 10 months.
The role of the Camoes Institute is the promotion and spread of Portuguese language and cultural studies. The holder of the bursary will be required to help Portuguese Studies in the organization of annual cultural events within the University.
Postgraduate students currently working in Portuguese Studies may apply, and preference may be given to those registered for research degrees within Modern Languages.
