Taught postgraduate degree programmes
We offer six masters programmes which are organised to allow you to pursue an in depth single subject or to opt for a more interdisciplinary approach. We also offer an online postgraduate certificate which can provide direct entry into the second semester of the MA in English Language Teaching. All Southampton's MA programmes can be studied full-time or part-time.

MA Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching
The overall aim of the programme is to provide advanced training in applied linguistics or language in education to professionals with language interests, typically language teachers in schools, further and higher education. We aim to provide this training in an integrated manner, both to professionals with interests in UK based education, and those operating internationally.

The MA English Language Teaching (ELT) is a post experience programme which provides teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) from the UK and overseas with the opportunity to reflect on their professional experience, develop a deeper understanding of the theory and practice of English language teaching.

Postgraduate Certificate in English Language Teaching: Online
This one year, two semester course benefits from the joint expertise of the University of Southampton and the British Council and is delivered entirely online using "leading edge" learning materials. It provides a comprehensive introduction to current theory and practice in applied linguistics and language teaching and is aimed at practising EFL teachers who want to update their knowledge and reflect on their practice. It represents the first year of the MA English Language Teaching: Online.

This innovative five semester online course allows successful graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in English Language Teaching: Online to further enhance their knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of English language teaching and to engage in independent research.

This programme is intended as a preparation for doctoral study and provides thorough training in research methodology for candidates interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or lecturer in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, or language acquisition.

MA/MPhil/PhD Transnational Studies: Society, Culture, Language
The MA in Transnational Studies aims to train students to think outside of national frameworks, in order to meet the challenges of an increasingly globalised world. Unlike current existing programmes in Transnational Studies, which cover politics, economics and development, this MA degree focuses on transnational theories and phenomena across a wide range of the humanities and social sciences.

European Master's degree. An Innovative Approach
The two year European Master's degree in Language Teacher Education: Spanish, French and English as a Foreign Language in Intercultural Contexts is the result of close collaboration between nine European universities with a long tradition in the field of modern-language teaching.
