Our reputation attracts the best academic talent

Modern Languages has a thriving research community and is home to several internationally renowned research centres.

Our research covers French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American studies, Portuguese and linguistics with particular focus on film and television, linguistics, literature, culture, society, politics, history, anthropology and transnational studies.

Modern Languages at the University of Southampton are ranked as fifth in the UK for the overall quality of our research (Grade Point Average) out of 57 submissions nationally. We were one of six groups in the University to be ranked in the top five in their subject area.

Our research quality is rated as third in the Russell Group, behind the specialist linguistics groups at Queen Mary and Edinburgh. 84% of our published research was rated world leading or internationally excellent (grade 4* or 3*).

As a medium sized department, we were pleased to be placed in the top 20 ‘power’ ranking, where quality is multiplied by the size of department.
