Research
In recognition of the high proportion of our staff carrying out "world-leading" research, Modern Languages was ranked in the top 2 UK Universities for European Studies in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Modern Languages research covers French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, Portuguese and Linguistics with particular focus on Film and Television, Linguistics, Literature, Culture, Society, Politics, History, Anthropology and Transnational Studies.

Centre for Applied Language ResearchThe Centre for Applied Language Research main focus is the research and advanced teaching in applied linguistics.
Centre for Transnational StudiesThe Centre for Transnational Studies brings together expertise in modern languages, and regional and national identity in modern Europe.
Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non Jewish Relations
Modern Languages staff also actively participate in the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non Jewish Relations.
