University of Southampton Open Days – We meet prospective Ocean and Earth Students
The Ocean and Earth Science July Open Days took place this weekend with students from across the country turning out to discover more about studying at Southampton. Young people from all around the UK travelled to the University for the fun packed informative day to learn more about life at our Waterfront Campus.
Ocean and Earth Science were located at both the Highfield Campus and our waterfront campus. There were talks on Geology, Geophysical Sciences, Marine Biology and Oceanography. Facilitated by course leaders, the talks gave budding scientists the opportunity to ask any questions they may have had about studying Ocean and Earth Science at Southampton and to learn more about what it’s really like to be a student in a world leading department.
The Open Day weekend provided visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the world-renowned research institution, the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) home to our waterfront campus. Tour groups stopped by the newly renovated teaching laboratories, research aquarium, student centre, rock preparation labs and research vessels. There were displays showcasing our unique programmes and the opportunities available to bolster employability as well as interesting displays showcasing the high impact research carried out by Ocean and Earth Science academic staff. Visitors also enjoyed looking at undergraduate project work and research in subject specific seminar rooms. Lecturers, admissions staff and student ambassadors were on hand throughout the day to talk to prospective students about their options and to provide them with help and guidance on one of the most important decisions they will ever have to make; which university course to choose!
Professor Steve Roberts, Head of Ocean and Earth Science said: ‘It’s been fantastic to see our staff, and current students engaged and sharing stories and experiences with our prospective students and their parents as they enjoy tours and demonstrations here at the waterfront campus. Around the University there was a wealth of information available to visitors and their supporters. There were accommodation tours, finance talks, student life sessions and studying abroad talks. In addition, visitors enjoyed University cupcakes, taking photos in front of the giant ‘UoS’ lettering and discovering the variety of student societies on offer at Union Southampton. The excitement spilled over onto social media with visitors sharing their experiences and entering the Instagram competition using the #UoSOpenDay hashtag, @UniSouthampton and @OceanEarthUoS Twitter tags.
