Prospective postgraduate students

The diversity of research opportunities offered by Philosophy, together with regular research seminars, leading visiting speakers and an annual postgraduate conference that attracts students from around the country, ensures that we have a vibrant research culture, with a strong and growing postgraduate community at its heart.

Why choose Southampton?

We regard the teaching of our MA students and the supervision of postgraduate research students for MPhil or PhD degrees as one of our most important activities. We are proud of the contributions we as philosophers make to our individual fields, and see the quality of the research produced by this department as a major reason for you to choose to come here. We provide training in research and related skills, regular and frequent meetings with supervisors and advisers, and aim to integrate our students fully into the life of the department.

Life as a postgraduate studying Philosophy

Philosophy has a large and vibrant postgraduate community, with over twenty students currently registered. We have a successful record in attracting postgraduate funding, and students may also apply to the postgraduate research co-ordinator for sums to fund research training and conference attendance. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in our research seminars, at which both eminent visiting speakers, our own staff and research students contribute to lively and informative discussions. In addition, we host an annual postgraduate conference which this year, the eleventh in the series, is on the theme of Scepticism.
