We are delighted to announce that the 2nd Computer Science Regius Chair Lecture will be presented by Professor Tom Rodden, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham and hosted by Professor Dame Wendy Hall, Regius Chair of Computer Science at the University of Southampton.

Tom's lecture entitled 'From Esoteric Endeavour to Economic Driver: the Changing Face of Computing in the UK', will reflect on how computing has matured over 30 years and how the nature of the discipline and endeavour has altered and the demands and responsibilities have grown.

About the Speaker

 Professor Rodden sits on the University of Nottingham's Executive Board and has responsibility for the university’s research portfolio, implementing the Research Strategy, which aims to transform research quality, performance and culture. He also chairs the university’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) Steering Group, leading its post-REF2021 review to lay the foundations in preparing for the next REF exercise, as well as chairing the Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee and Nottingham Technology Ventures, which manages the university’s portfolio of spinout companies. A Professor of Computing, Tom joined the University of Nottingham in 2001 and served as Deputy Chief Executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) from April 2016 to April 2018 and was Deputy Executive Chair between April 2018 and January 2019, with responsibility for research strategy, acting as the UK Research and Innovation lead in both Artificial Intelligence (AI) and e-Infrastructure. Professor Rodden served as Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) from January 2019 until September 2023, and is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, a fellow of the British Computer Society and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.  He is also Co-Chair of Responsible AI UK. 

About the Regius Chair in Computer Science

Professor Dame Wendy Hall was appointed to the Chair of Regius Professor in Computer Science in 2017.  The prestigious Regius Professorship was awarded to the University of Southampton in 2013 by HM The Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee – the first and only Regius Professorship in Computer Science to be granted. A Regius Professorship is a rare privilege and reflects the exceptionally high-quality of teaching and research at the University.
