Boldrewood Innovation Campus

The University has completed construction of Block D/G, the final phase of the Boldrewood redevelopment.

The building is home to the UKCRIC National Infrastructure Laboratory, housing state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities for geomechanics, heavy structures, solid mechanics and infrastructure engineering. The facilities will be used to develop new understandings of the behaviour of large structures and structural components, with an emphasis on infrastructure, rail and maritime engineering.

The building was opened in September 2019 and marks the completion of 10 years of significant development on this site to create a truly world-leading, collaborative facility that will benefit our staff, students, the city and people around the world for many years into the future.

The redevelopment of Boldrewood

Phase 1: Building 175 and 176

Following demolition of old Boldrewood campus, the first phase of buildings on this campus began construction was completed in 2014. 175 is linked to 176 by the MCE (Marine Centre of Excellence) space, housing a lecture theatre study space and computer labs and forming the heart of the University business collaboration. Building 175 houses new University office space and Engineering Laboratory space, including our autonomous vehicles Laboratory.

Phase 2: Building 185

Building 185 was granted full planning permission in 2013 and was completed in 2015. Running along the Northern side of the campus it houses many exciting facilities, including an anechoic wind chamber and a 186 meter towing tank, in addition to teaching rooms and office space.

In September 2015, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal officially opened the new campus and performed a 'mixing of the waters' ceremony in the University's new towing tank.

Phase 3: block D/G and Car Park 2

Construction of the final building, The National Infrastructure Laboratory (D/G), was completed in September 2019. Before starting development of the building, the University created a new staff car parking area to accommodate the staff who will be using the new facility. This car park opened in autumn 2016.
