A group of postgraduate researchers from Business, Law and the Arts (FBLA) went head to head last Friday in their Three Minute Thesis faculty final.

Five doctoral researchers took to the spotlight for their three minutes, in which they had to condense thousands of hours' work on their thesis into a bite sized, engaging and comprehensible presentation.

Each PGR brought an interesting topic to the event, ranging from entrepreneurship education to advergames, from car vehicle routing to the role of career orientation.

The winning presentation came from Elizabeth Herbert, who will now go on to represent FBLA in the 3MT Grand Final in May. Based in Law, Elizabeth posed the question ‘Could you go straight if you had to go it alone?’ in regards to criminals and re-offending.

Elizabeth said she felt surprised and happy to have won the FBLA faculty final. She also explained why she decided to get involved this year and how she prepared for the event:

“I wanted to take part because I thought it would be useful for crystallising my research and focusing on what I was doing. I also thought it looked like fun, would be interesting and that it would be a good way to put myself out there.

I went to the Doctoral College 3MT workshop which I found really useful and then worked on my script and just practiced it over and over again.”

Dr Regina Rauxloh, Associate Professor within the Southampton Law School, chaired the Judging Panel and recognised Elizabeth for her winning performance. She also awarded Vanissa Wanick for her presentation on advergames, winning second place.

Before announcing the results, Regina said: ‘I’d like to thank those who have taken the brave decision to put themselves forward, in front of a group of non-specialists and explain their research. They really have put in a great effort and I hope that even more PhD students take part next year.’

The five competitors who took part for FBLA were:

  • Ilies Nasri
  • Hang Tran
  • AbdulRahman Badwan
  • Elizabeth Herbert
  • Vanissa Wanick

Congratulations from the Doctoral College to all those who took part in the FBLA 3MT faculty final.

The next faculty final to take place is today for the Faculty of Medicine –
